As a seasoned nonprofit leader with 25 years of experience, including 17 years as a CEO/Executive Director, I remember in the early years of my career when we would send out our bulk mailing to our donors. We would sort the envelopes ourselves in order to save on postage. It was a complicated and tedious process. When I became the Executive Director, one of the first pivotal decisions I made on my leadership journey was to outsource our bulk mailing, a move that not only saved time but sparked a philosophy on efficiency and resource allocation.
I realized that attempting to handle everything internally often led to hidden costs, particularly in time and attention diverted from core competencies. Embracing the strategic use of consultants and outsourcing allowed me to concentrate on areas where I could bring the most value to the organizations I led.
This mindset guided me through challenging periods, such as steering two organizations successfully through the 2008 recession and the recent pandemic. In the face of adversity, I increased operating budgets and revenue substantially, proving the effectiveness of a targeted approach to leadership and focus on where I brought most value.
Beyond my executive roles in nonprofits, within limited weekend and evening hours, I built an online business out of my love for cheerleading called Cheer Coach Academy. I utilized the same principles that fueled organizational growth. My business grew to a point that I was able to pursue and solely focus on my entrepreneurial dreams, one of which is to help others, like me, who lead nonprofits and/or small businesses.Â
